As far back as she could remember, Debbi J. Needham wanted to be author. She
dreamed about seeing her own books on the shelves next to her favorite authors.
Born in 1971, she lived with her mother and sister in Puyallup, a small rural town not far
from the foot of Mt. Rainier in Washington State, and about an hour's drive south of the city of
Seattle. During those years before video games, she read a lot of books especially science
fiction, fantasy, historical fiction and adventure stories. On long walks through her woods to
school everyday, she imagined characters in historical settings and imagined she had the
power to see into the past, just like her main character, Simon, in the Adventures in Times
series.
In the mid 1980's at the age of 15, she earned her high-school equivalency degree and
moved to Tacoma, Washington, to work in the music industry. She met many rising stars as
they passed through Tacoma on their way to become famous musicians of the Seattle rock
music scene.
In the late 1980's she enrolled at Pierce College. There, she fell in love with learning. It
wasn't long before her writing talent was discovered by the school's journalism instructor,
Michael Parks. He asked her to write for the college's newspaper, The Pioneer. Eventually
she became its Editor-in-Chief. Soon after, she took a job as a freelance reporter for the
Tacoma Weekly newspaper.
After earning her Associate of Arts & Sciences degree, she moved to Philadelphia, PA,
to attend Temple University's School of Journalism. But, melancholy for the Northwest
brought her back to Washington. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology at
the University of Washington in Seattle in 1996. That same year she won two first place
medals in the Washington State Press Association's college journalism competition.
Debbi Needham worked as a professional newspaper editor, writer, and photographer.
In the evenings, she kept writing and finally completed three novels. In 2003, she sold two
of the novels which became the Adventures in Times book series published by Orchard
House Press in 2008.
Soon after, she changed careers, first working as an entrepreneur, and then as an
educator at Lincoln High School in Tacoma teaching students with learning differences. It
was there that she realized she wanted to become a certificated teacher. She went back to
college, again, and earned a Master in Teaching degree to become a public school teacher
in 2006.
Debbi Needham resides in the Pacific Northwest with her two teenage daughters and
their household full of curious pets including rare and endangered birds, a pair of Crested
Geckos named Frodo and Samwise, a couple of cats in their golden years, and two tiny
Chihuahuas named Tubby Oso and Cheeto. She continues to teach public school and
writes whenever possible.
